Soil Boring

There are instances, after a petroleum release has occurred that there is a requirement to perform a investigation.  When those releases, or spills, occur inside a basement this work is done with the use of a core drill (the one photographed is manufactured by Hilti).  Tri-State Environmental technicians hand advance borings through the floor which can be 4" thick reinforced concrete or a skim coat of concrete over a dirt floor which is frequently the condition in older homes.  A photoionization detector (commonly known as a PID in the industry) is used to field screen inside the boring which is testing the head space area for volatile compounds.  Readings are documented, a site sketch is created.  Results are provided to the governing agency, most frequently the NYS DEC so the need for further investigation and/or remediation can be determined.
